Governor Pence Signs Adoption Tax Credit

Governor Mike Pence today signed legislation that will improve the quality of life for Hoosier families.

In his 2014 State of the State address in January, the Governor called for Indiana to become "the most pro-adoption state in America" by improving the way it places children from state care into adoptive homes, and by supporting parents who are willing to adopt a child.

"As we envision the future for Indiana, ensuring the well-being of our Hoosier families is of the utmost importance," said Governor Pence. "From the creation of Indiana's first adoption tax credit to acting as responsible stewards of our natural resources, the bills I sign today will enhance the quality of life for Hoosier families today and tomorrow."

The Governor signed the following quality of life agenda bills today:

HEA 1222, which creates a nonrefundable $1,000 tax credit per adopted child beginning taxable year 2015. It also tasks a legislative study committee with examining effective adoption programs in other states and providing recommendations for improvements regarding legal and regulatory costs associated with adoption in Indiana.
HEA 1183 to begin a renewed emphasis on resource conservation with a goal of recycling 50 percent of our municipal waste. The legislation is a first step toward making Indiana a national resource conservation leader. The new law requires the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to collect data to track progress toward the 50 percent goal and the Interim Study Committee on Environmental Affairs, a legislative summer study committee, to examine recycling policies to help the State reach its goal.

On March 13, 2014, Pence signed SEA 352, which will make approximately 26,000 post-911 veterans eligible to apply for assistance through the Military Family Relief Fund by eliminating the current three-year restriction on access to the fund.
